Recall Alert: BMW 2 Series, 3 Series, X3, X4

BMW has issued a recall that affects just 201 vehicles. But affected owners will want to respond right away. They may be driving cars that have loose steering components.

The recall applies to a small number of each of the:

BMW will contact owners by mail in early January.

The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that steering gears in the cars “may not have been produced to specifications by the supplier.” Because of that, BMW says, internal bolts could loosen. “If the connection between the servo unit and the housing rack became loose, this could affect vehicle handling and control, which could increase the risk of a crash.”

Drivers might notice unusual noise or vibration as the problem develops.

Technicians discovered the problem at the factory. BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to it.

Dealers will replace the entire steering gear in the affected vehicles. By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.

Many cars are recalled to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
