Report: Volvo EX90 To Arrive With Missing Features

Volvo’s upcoming EX90 all-electric SUV is a showpiece of high-tech features. The new flagship of the Volvo lineup has a starting price in the high-$70,000 range and everything from internal radar that can detect a baby breathing under a blanket in the back seat to headlights that blink in greeting.

But a new report says they won’t all be available right away.

Software Update Will Add Them Later

Motor1 reports that Volvo has emailed reservation holders to tell them their cars may be delivered without some advertised features. Volvo will add them later through a software update.

“The list includes safety and convenience features, with the full capability and integration of the LiDAR system unlocked after a future update.”

They’re not all related to external sensors. Car and Driver notes, “Customers will have to wait to be able to utilize wireless Apple CarPlay and will have to stick with the infotainment screen and digital gauge cluster’s dark mode for the time being.”

Bi-directional charging – the ability to use the car’s battery to charge other tools and even homes – will also come later, according to reports.

Volvo has also reportedly told customers that the car’s battery will lose its charge in a slow trickle while parked. The state of charge will drop about 3% per day for the first three days, keeping certain computer functions running. It will then enter a sleep mode that eliminates the problem.

Volvo expects to fix this issue with a future update as well.

Finally, Motor1 reports, “The EX90’s Plug & Charge feature is also missing from the first batch of deliveries.” Plug and charge allows owners to plug into most public chargers without logging into an app or using a credit card, trusting that they’ll be billed automatically.

Over-the-air updates are the new normal in car ownership. But a car shipped to customers without advertised features is uncommon. Volvo recently delayed the smaller EX30 electric SUV entirely after new tariffs made importing it complicated.

The EX90, however, should be unaffected by the tariffs. Volvo builds the 3-row SUV in South Carolina.
