Just 8.3% of people who buy the average car get a speeding ticket in it. However, nearly a quarter of Subaru BRZ drivers have been pulled over for exceeding the limit.
That may not be all that surprising. Subaru’s little rear-wheel drive (RWD) sports car is all about affordable performance. It’s one of the least expensive enthusiast cars on the market, starting at $31,315, including the mandatory $1,120 destination fee. That puts quickness in the hands of many people, including those who may not have the resources or know-how to test it out at a track day event.
The Chevy Cruze Limited, though? An affordable small sedan that left the market after the 2019 model year, the Cruze makes an odd entry on the list of most-ticketed cars. But it sits at number four — 17.9% of Cruze owners have been ticketed.
The BRZ, however, establishes a trend for the list. It’s full of inexpensive sporty cars — often discontinued models likely available for low prices on the used market.
The numbers come from Insurify, an insurance comparison shopping service. Because owners must disclose tickets when insurance shopping, the company has a good read on trends in traffic policing. But there’s one important caveat — its data may tell us that an owner applying for insurance for their Cruze got a ticket this year, but it can’t tell us if they earned their ticket in that car.
Insurify has been having some fun sharing its data this year. Last month, they reported that Infiniti owners get the most tickets. Now, they’ve broken the data out by model and, curiously, found not one Infiniti in the top 10.
To get the numbers, Insurify says, its “data science team examined more than 97 million rates from car insurance applications in its proprietary database. Insurify driver applications originate from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and include information on driving history and coverage specifications.”
