What Is a Block Heater?

A block heater is an electrical device that warms a vehicle’s engine body and fluids to ensure the engine can start in winter conditions and freezing temps. Preconditioning the engine also puts less stress on the engine when driving through the cold. In such climates, engine block heaters are popular among truck buyers.

Block heaters typically plug into a 110-volt household outlet. They take a few hours, not minutes, to be effective.

Similarly, electric vehicles use heat pumps to precondition their batteries, making the chilly conditions less draining on the EV’s range.
